CIMSA UPH conducted a Community Development project called “Gerakan Berhenti Merokok” or known as GEBROK 5.0 which aims to provide counseling sessions to high school students about the negative effects of cigarettes and its kind such as e-cigarettes (vape) on their health. The GEBROK 5.0 event was held at SMAN 17 Tangerang for three interventions.

The first intervention was carried out on January 18, 2020, as a first step to educating, and also guiding participants to know and understand the dangers of smoking and encourage participants who smoke to quit with their own consciousness.

The opening of the event was carried out with an ice-breaking which was brought by the MC (Master of Ceremony) event to attract the participants’ attention by playing a few games so that they were more excited and focused on the event. Then, participants will be given various questions as a pre-test to test their knowledge on the topic of this event, namely the negative effects of cigarettes and its kind such as e-cigarettes (vape) on their health.

The event was continued with exposure to hazardous substances from cigarettes by dr. Sylvia Sagita Siahaan, a lung specialist who is very eager to work together in this event. dr. Sylvia also provided a deeper knowledge about the medical impact of cigarettes. The theory that has been presented also alludes to e-cigarettes or better known as a vape, where many people still do not know about the effects of this thing. The presentation was very interesting so that participants who were high school students could understand well and clearly. Participants became more interested in this topic and many of them wanted to ask dr. Sylvia about the topic more deeply.

Next, the participants were divided into many groups to participate in the next series of events, the game booths. There are 3 booths, where each booth will be visited by 2 groups that will compete to play while learning more about the topic of the event. The first booth was a cigarette and cotton experiment, where the cotton in the bottle would turn black when the cigarette smoke was sucked into the bottle, followed by a quiz game about cigarettes. The second booth is a collection of fun facts about cigarettes, where the committee will provide various questions for participants to answer. Finally, the third booth is an eat bulaga game where someone demonstrates a word, and someone else guesses the word.

GEBROK 5.0 program ended with giving questions as a post-test to the participants to test whether they understood about the topic that has been brought by dr. Sylvia, and also followed by a bonding session. The bonding session was conducted by dividing participants into many groups, accompanied by 2 event organizers in each group. Participants were given a notebook containing personal questions about their experiences and reasons for smoking (for those who smoke), as well as a calendar to be marked on the date they want to stop smoking, and also a picture of cigarettes that they will give a black dot every time they smoke. This bonding session aims to make participants who smoke more open and can be given guidance from the committees directly and without any pressure.
